The mission of the National Parkinson Foundation is to improve the quality of care for people with Parkinson’s disease through research, education and outreach.

Founded in 1957, NPF is a leading national organization with an extensive grassroots network of Centers of Excellence, chapters and support groups in the United States, Canada and internationally. Unique among the national Parkinson’s organizations, NPF is the only organization with a singular focus on improving the quality of care in Parkinson’s disease. Since 1982, NPF has funded more than $140 million in care, research and support services.

The National Parkinson Foundation believes that in their battle with Parkinson disease, knowledge is power and hope is everything. Every day at NPF they strive to provide patients and caregivers with the resources that help people fight back. They support the research that helps move everyone forward. The cause and cure of Parkinson disease will be found.

What is Parkinson's disease?

Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder. It occurs when certain nerve cells (neurons) in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra die or become impaired. Normally, these cells produce a vital chemical known as dopamine. Dopamine allows smooth, coordinated function of the body's muscles and movement. When approximately 80% of the dopamine-producing cells are damaged, the symptoms of Parkinson's disease appear.
