What is Parkinson's disease?
Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder. It occurs when certain nerve cells (neurons) in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra die or become impaired. Normally, these cells produce a vital chemical known as dopamine. Dopamine allows smooth, coordinated function of the body's muscles and movement. When approximately 80% of the dopamine-producing cells are damaged, the symptoms of Parkinson's disease appear.

We Can't Believe It's Already Over!
It's been a challenging 30 days... and the Zipcar Low-Car Diet presented by Berry Chill has finally come to an end. It's bittersweet for all of us Berry Chill especially because we have grown to love and admire the participants. For the participants, the challenge meant giving up their car keys, and changing their lifestyle. They were asked to use Zipcar's car sharing service in place of using their own cars, if they had one. Practically all of the participants realized how easy, stress-free, and economically and environmentally friendly it was to live car-free.
To get a feel for a day in the life of a low-car dieter, I'll show you one of the blogs Mara Unterberger sent in!
So this evening, August 14th, we will celebrate their success and let them know (if they don't already) how proud we really are of their accomplishments at the Skybox on Sheffield in Wrigley Field from 5-8 p.m.
p.s.- There WILL be a winner picked this evening, so stay tuned for a feature on the blog!

Exhausted
While I am writing this, I am struggling to keep my eyes open and it is only 7:15pm. Today I woke up around 9am so that I could make it to the gym by 10am. I did the same two classes that I did last Sunday, Skinny Jeans and Above the Belt. I was nervous because a different teacher was standing in for the teacher that normally teaches the class. Andrea is the normal teacher and she is my favorite! I did like the teacher that taught the class today, but not as much as Andrea. I walked the mile both to and from the gym and then did an hour at the gym. That alone was enough to make me tired!
After class, I picked up a turkey sandwich for lunch and ran home to eat it before softball. I had a softball game from 1-2pm. It is about a mile walk each way to the softball field and the game was about an hour long. On top of the gym I could barely walk home!
After the softball game I had reserved a Zipcar so that I could drive to Berry Chill. The Zipcar was about a half mile from my house. In total I walked about 5 miles, spent an hour at the gym and another hour playing softball. This is the most exercise I think I have ever done in my life! I have to say that while I dragged myself everywhere today, I am glad that I did it and know that I will sleep well tonight.
Tomorrow I have another session with Jenny. I am sure that she will kick my butt in the gym but I am looking forward to it because I have fun working out with her. I will try and update tomorrow after the gym, if I am still standing!

Wining and Dining For a Good Cause
Hey all! I wanted to give you all a chance to party with Berry Chill and benefit a great cause - at the same time! Below are the details for Berry Chill's charity partner the Red Cross of Chicago's Mission: Red event happening this Friday, August 14th at the Chicago Cultural Center:
You’re invited to experience the Red Cross like never before at the inaugural Mission: Red Experience Auction on August 14, 2009. Mission: Red is sure to be THE event of the summer. It’s a night where Chicagoland’s most philanthropic professionals will network, eat, drink, dance and bid on once-in-a-lifetime auction packages (looks for Berry Chill's!) to support the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago’s efforts to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters. Mission: Red will feature music from local acoustic guitarist Dan Darrah and DJ Pasha (of Lollapalooza fame) as well as complimentary food and cocktails. If that’s not enough to entice you, take a chance in the raffle to win a trip for two to LA to go behind the scenes on the set of CSI: NY as the guest of one of the show’s stars, Hill Harper aka “Dr. Sheldon Hawkes”.
As a friend of the Red Cross, Mission: Red sponsors are inviting Berry Chill fans to take part in their exclusive online offer – enter secret code “FFDTICKET” and receive $25 off your admission. This offer is valid for online ticket sales only and is available until 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 13.
You can support the efforts of the Greater Chicago Red Cross by becoming a fan of their Facebook page (located here http://bit.ly/4u6aUJ) and attending Mission: Red on Friday, August 14, from 8 p.m. to Midnight at the Chicago Cultural Center. To find out more about Mission: Red and to reserve your tickets, visit http://chicagoredcross.org/missionred.
C'mon y'all! Join us in our berry generous effort to support the efforts of the Greater Chicago Red Cross!

The Results Are In!
I posted a poll earlier this week to get feedback about this month's flavors from our Berry loyal customers! It turns out that Chocolate Covered Strawberry was the winner (I wasn't surprised). I have to say, Chocolate Covered Strawberry is my favorite chocolate variation that the yogurteur has concocted yet! Sprinkle some Banana-Chocolate granola, Rice Krispies Treats, and fresh-cut bananas on there and I'm floating on cloud 9!
Got a favorite BC flavor that didn't make it to the poll? I want to hear what it is! I encourage you to share it with me by commenting on this post so we can discuss your favorite flavor (and toppings!).
I'll BC'in ya!

We're Going To Be Mesmerized This Weekend!
Those of you attending the Vans Warped Tour concert this Saturday, August 1st, at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park should be excited to know that the Berry Chill cart will be there too! Although there are supposed to be isolated thunderstorms in the early afternoon on Saturday, us Chicagoans can always count on the weathers tendency to beat the odds. Regardless, it should be a great concert this weekend rain or shine! To all you Warped Tour fans- HAVE A BLAST!
Peace easy,

It's that time of the month again!
Berry Chill and Imerman Angels have teamed up for a monthly ice cream (or yogurt, rather) social at Prentice Memorial every first Tuesday of the month. With that said, tomorrow, July 28th, Berry Chill will be at Prentice serving some nutritional yogurt to patients, families, doctors, and nurses. Our most recent experience with the Imerman Angels at the yogurt social (we just can't manage to call it an ice cream social, bear with me) was a great success. Everyone was so helpful and welcoming, so we just can't wait to get back into the groove of things tomorrow!
Yogi lost his camera last week, but where there's a will, there's a way- we WILL manage to post a pic or two of the great team working the event tomorrow!
We'll BC'in ya!

Yogi Witnessed History
Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox pitched a perfect game yesterday, July 23rd. He became the 18th Major League Baseball player to pitch a perfect game- what an achievement! Yogi couldn't help but notice that after BC's recent migration to U.S. Cellular Field, Buehrle made baseball history, call Yogi crazy if you want but it must be the yogurt!
From all of us at Berry Chill, congratulations Mark Buehrle! You are Chicago's gem. We know that you will continue to make us proud!
Coldplay+Berry Chill= A Super Chill Crowd?
Berry Chill will be keeping it uber chill this weekend at the Coldplay concert on Saturday July 25th at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre. According to meteorologists, Saturday is set to hit a high of 80 degrees! Yogi is eager to unleash his inner rocker, and with that weather in mind, nothing can stop him from jamming out! If your fellow concert goers are rocking out too hard and you need a break, don't hesitate to grab a tasty treat at the BC stand in the Expo Center! BC could quite possibly be one of the only food options at the concert that won't drain your wallet to the very last penny. Go crazy, rockers!

The BC cart will also be in the carousel at the John Legend show tonight, July 21st, at the Ravinia Festival. Stop by and see us if you’re there!
Yogi would like to leave you all with one message: Rock on, rockstars!

Let's Get Fit!
Over the past decade, fitness has taken on a whole new meaning. It's no longer just associated with hitting the gym and what you eat- it's about HOW you look and less about FEELING good. If that wasn't enough, we all have to factor in the current status of our economy. With that being said, all of us at Berry Chill sincerely want to help make lifestyles changes less of a fantasy and more of a reality!
We are teaming up with Zipcar, Chicago's largest car sharing service, to participate in this year's Low-Car Diet! This is a great opportunity for Chicagoans to experience all the benefits of living car-free and instead, opt for a healthier and more active lifestyle. Zipcar and Berry Chill are searching for 30 local contestants who will pledge to live car-free and take on a healthier lifestyle for one month beginning July 15th. With the participation of Equinox, Ortanic, Halo salons, and lululemon, Berry Chill will be making sure that you stay healthy (adding in a daily dose of our chilled yogurt doesn't hurt either...) Can you think of an easier way to make AND stick to a mid-year resolution?
Stay tuned dear readers. Yogi will post most info asap. Who's interested?!

The power of Twitter
As most of you know, Yogi is a social media fiend and this past week Twitter began buzzing with word that Peter Shankman, a "social media CEO adventurist" or in other words an "entrepreneur, author, speaker, and worldwide connector" (www.shankman.com) would be in town making a special stop at Berry Chill on 635 N. State today, July 2nd at 10 a.m. And boy were we pleasantly surprised when we saw the turn out this morning! Charismatic and generous (he treated the entire crowd!), we are delighted that he wanted to share with the crowd his expertise as well as with a nutritious treat this morning.

Yogurt Social
Hi all! Yesterday Berry Chill teamed up with the Imerman Angels Foundation to participate in their monthly ice cream social at Prentice Memorial Hospital. Just to give you all a little background information, Imerman Angels is a not-for-profit organization that connects a person fighting cancer today with someone who has beaten the same type of cancer. They provide support to cancer fighters and survivors across the United States and will never turn anyone down.
We also wanted to take this opportunity to thank the gracious volunteers and express our utter awe of their inner strength. The energy of the volunteers lifted the spirits of everyone at the ice cream social and we cannot wait for next month!

Who screams? We scream! We all scream for ICE CREAM!!
Or Chilled Yogurt… we just honestly couldn’t think of a catch phrase for BC. However, while we’re on the topic of ice cream we’d like to take this opportunity to fill you all in on a very special cause we hold close to our hearts. Imerman Angels has provided Berry Chill with the opportunity to provide yogurts to patients, families, doctors, and nurses monthly, beginning tomorrow! We are thrilled that we have the opportunity to socialize with very special individuals and provide a healthy and tasty treat at the same time!
Sox, Cubs... or is it Cubs, Sox?
We have been at U.S. Cellular Field almost everyday this past week and would just like to thank everyone for being a berry excited and entertaining crowd! For all the devout Chicago baseball fans out there, we are quite familiar with your loyalty to the Sox and the Cubs, respectively. But we were pleasantly surprised by the neutrality of fans when it came to Berry Chill. To all the Sox and Cubs fans out there- way to get your preference for chilled yogurt just right!

Yogi was at U.S. Cellular Park yesterday to watch the Sox play the Dodgers, what a game! As most of you know, Berry Chill is now part of the menu at the club level of the stadium. Being quite the social butterfly that he is, Yogi spotted some baseball fans getting their BC fix on a sizzling hot game day. He mainly ran into Berry Chill first-timers, so we’re glad we could chill them out on the hot summer day that it was!

A little recap
As most of you know, last week we raffled off tickets for our Just for Laughs promotion. Pictured here are Kirby, who won tickets to The Nasty Show, and Joanne, who won tickets to Martin Short. They were among the winners who were chosen by both our in-store raffle, and by Yogi Jones himself who was actively twittering away searching for winners. We hope our winners had an enjoyable experience at the shows, and encourage you all to stay berry chill in this newfound summer heat!
Kirby twittered upon receiving her tickets, "@YogiJones Thanks Berry Chill for the Just For Laughs tickets! And couldn't resist the best mid-day treat with @lauraclemons :)"
And Joanne twittered about her experience, "An absolutely amazing show last night at The Vic. Martin Short still has it! Thanks @YogiJones & Berry Chill!!"
Thanks to all who participated!

What a berry successful night!
Our evening at the Chicago Theatre was a great success! Kanye performed, despite the migraine he was suffering from during the day, and Nick Cannon DJ’d the evening. And of course, Ellen was fantastic and hilarious. Here’s a picture of the BC cart in the theatre.
For those of you who purchased BC at the theatre last night, keep in mind that the proceeds from last nights’ sales are going to Ellen Degeneres' favorite chairty, the Humane Society of the United States!
